UPCAT Tips

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008
So, I’ve just learned last week that the UPCAT will be on August 2-3 already, since the university has prepared for it already. As usual, large banners of college names are scattered around the campus. The University of the Philippines College Admission Test or UPCAT is the entrance examination to the Philippines’ premiere university. Gatheirng around sixty to eighty thousand of fourth year students nationwide, aspiring to be enrolled in the institution.

I’m not a genius or a master in examination taking but here’s hoping that my entry can help you gear up for the exam. I am also an aspirant of the privilege before, I have put the aspiration into reality so I would like to share some thoughts you might want to know which could help you pass the exam.

PINOY IDOL: Kid Camaya

Sunday, July 20th, 2008
If there is one contestant in Pinoy Idol, that I’m very pleased to watch every now and then, it’s Elizalde “Kid” Camaya.

I am quite sad that Kid hasn’t been getting nice reviews since the start of the show, especially from Wyngard Tracy. Disregard the judges’ comments. They’re f*cktards.

He might be kinda boring but his voice melts me like hell. I mean, this guy has the best vocals in the competition right now, and I’d rather vote for him rather than the good-looking ones who sings like chipmunks.

This is the best of the competition so far and it was from him! Very very soulful!

Another performance!

Here’s a complete list of his performances:
SEMIFINALS

Top 12 Male: A Song For You

Top 10 Male: Always Something There to Remind Me

Top 8 Male: Love Always Finds A Way

Top 7 Male: Gone Too Soon

FINALS

Top 12: My Greatest Performance – Ordinary People

Top 11: I Sing For You- I’ll Never Love This Way Again

Top 10: The Song of My Life – A Warrior is A Child

Top 9: Regine Night – Narito Ako

Top 8: Jaya Night – Kung Wala Na

Top 7: OPM- Stay

It’s pretty noticeable how Jaya and Regine were so impressed (not to mention Rey Valera and Aiza Seguerra) while watching his performances, Jaya and Regine were too shy to intercept with the judges to comment that he’s the best.

Kid is not deteriorating. He’s the best.

You, be the judge.

I am inviting all of you to join Kid’s forum site:
here: Kid Camaya

Kid is currently one of the Top 7 finalists of Pinoy Idol. Others in the competition were Penelope, Jayann Bautista, Gretchen Espina, Warren Antig, Daryl Celis and Ram Chaves. Earlier, Toffer Rei was eliminated.

To vote for Kid Camaya, text IDOL KID and send to 2344/327 :-) Let’s support this guy. He’s definitely ‘it’.

So You Think You Can Dance: Comfort is Back

I have recently been addicted to So You Think You Can Dance? and has been watching the show in Youtube for quite a few days now to catch up with the remaining contestants. We have seen the contestants with their solos and with new partners. And the major shocker of the night, is Jessica King’s last minute drop out which gave way to recently-eliminated Comfort Fedoke’s re-entry in the competition.

Jessica announced that she had to drop out due to her broken ribs.

And, I like Katee and Chelsea :-)

Survivor: Gabon

I am pretty much pumped up with the fever as Survivor Gabon: Earth’s Last Eden airs in only two months and the filming is about to end now. I am really excited since this would only be the second time that Survivor is going in Africa.

The Amazing Race Asia

Spoilers came across the boards that Tisha Silang and Geoff Rodriguez are the official Philippine representatives in the third installment of The Amazing Race Asia. Too bad for the couple, they were eliminated early (as spoiled). I am hoping that again, there are two Philippine teams. In the spoiler pictures in Thailand, among the contestants were an Indian couple, a Malay couple and a sort-of Jon and Al Korean buddies.

It is believed that we will have a Chiang Mai-Bangkok, Thailand leg, a Macau-Beijing, China leg, a Cochin, Singapore leg and a possible HongKong/Taiwan leg!

Big Brother 10

I am also very excited with Big Brother 10 since it would be the first season after six editions that we’ll see thirteen strangers inside the house. As of now, Brian and Renny were up for nomination and Brian got evicted last night. As of now, my favorites are Dan and Angie.

So, that’s it for now! :-) I’ve been to indulged with the reality TV vibe today, huh.

Of Pinoy Reality (Drama) Shows

Thursday, July 17th, 2008
Its kind of disappointing how the local franchise of reality shows are murdered in our country. Everyday, I sit in front of the TV and wait for these shows to air, and all I can see is a waste of time, but I, as an avid reality show fan, would have to suck it all up just for the sake of entertainment.

Pinoy Dream Academy might have better singers, better mentors, production and host but the abusive play of drama takes the reality talent search into a very different level. A level which crosses the boundary of privacy and emotions of the people involved in the competition. ABS knows that people find it amusing how others react and so they used the PBB concept on PDA, which turned out to be pathetic since they are letting the people decide on who stays and who goes… The PDA primetime show which should have showcased more about themes, song choices and trainings are filled with issues, controversies and drama or crying moments as to suit the taste of the audience and not to tell the audience who should win or who does really well or who does not.

We can choose the winner — the one with talent and the package without the show having focus on stories than performances. The way I see it, their performances do not determine their status in the competition — which should have been the main requirement for a talent show like PDA.

Because if the performances mattered, Sheng, Poy and Lambert should still be there and not Bea and Miguel (who was set up as a couple) and Christian.

Pinoy Idol presented us a hope that the next winner to be world-class, classy and well-recognized. Mau Marcelo has performed beyond what she was expected to do. She has represented our country well and made us proud. But, she wasn’t given proper recognition since Philippine Idol.

The only thing the first local franchise missed out is the lack of recognition. Since ABC 5 doesn’t have a roster of talents nor they don’t have any record company partnerships, the treatment and what’s in store for the finalists, post-Idol hit it low and got the finalists hanging after the show.

But still it was better, GMA 7 has definitely lost control of the current season. How I wish they put PI back to ABC 5, at least, they can do live performance and results shows. How I wish the host and the judges are apt for their positions and how I wish that the contestants who got through to the Finals are deserving enough to be in the position they were in now. We saw a lot of posers and a lot of immitators. And it doesn’t even fit the label Pinoy Idol since Pinoys are known to be excellent in singing and we have lots of world-class talents which we can really call Idols. The low-quality stage and the acoustics which seemed like Pinoy Pop Superstar transferred in SM Mall of Asia makes it much more worse.

The franchise which I once got excited to watch, turned into a pathetic and murdered show which I wouldn’t want to waste much of my time (if it weren’t for blogging or for shear entertainment).

What’s best is GMA 7 wasn’t able to hold us, the people, the voters, in our necks, to vote for those who deserve to stay. Instead, family members, relatives and some friends would rather vote for a crappy Chihuahua look-a-like, Bamboo impersonator and a matinee idol than excellent singers who have boring personalities.

Well, I can’t blame the two GIANT stations since even if they show good or bad things in the TV, they still profit from advertisement placements. We watch shows with commercials twice the length as the real show.

Nothing’s seems to be worth watching, nowadays. What would happen next?

I still have high hopes. Hopefully, Pinoy Fear Factor and Survivor Philippines deliver well.

Arts :-)

Monday, July 14th, 2008
Here’s a lousy reaction paper I wrote in thirty minutes. Rushing Anthropology paper, aye? The class watched “How Art Made the World?” last Thursday and I only knew that they did yesterday so I rushed this one-page paper.

What do you think? Crappy. I know. HAHA.

The Role of Art in the World

It’s fascinating, and at the same time, amazing how much art has contributed to the perception of humans and the development of the world. Somehow, the presence of art has been influential in such ways that it has been a huge part of what we are as of now.

One of the factors that brought about the evolution of art is culture. The culture is a powerful key in expression of art. There are a lot of artists who relied on cultural beliefs in expressing what they believe in, whether it be related to politics, social sciences, religion or sciences. Of course, everything that defies the art in the pieces is the style as to the preference of the authors, that is made of, by deducting details essentially from their senses and bodies around them.

Art is not limited to sculptures nor drawings only. It can be concluded that in the case of literature, art has eventually made a hero. It also played vital role in entertainment, more specifically in music.

But how does art affect humans, or artists per se? In the clip, there is a huge conception of human’s perception of art. It points out that the human body has probably been one of the most used subject in expression of art, only that, every art piece has distinct qualities that makes it different to the exact image of the human they are modeled from.

Most of the time, the tendency is to make an exaggeration of the human body, the face and other attributes of our bodies. Probably, there is really a defaulted image of perfection inside our minds that exaggerates our expression of things which translates to art pieces. For example, the Oblation was modeled from a human body, but it isn’t perfectly molded as the person whom it was modeled from. Instead, its features and details were overdone to signify its symbolism in the UP community.

Likewise, we tend to bring about the concept of “perfection” even unconsciously. Our imagination might have to be accounted for that since it could be possible that in our minds we’re thinking of something perfect that might not really exist or might have existed but not as perfect as we conceive it to be.

All in all, art has been a huge factor in determining the people of today. It could probably be accounted as artifacts of our cultural background or blueprints of the existing civilizations in the past. It has made the world in such a way that until now, it exists as a field that interrelates different sciences and ideologies. It has become a catalyst to the diversity and a proof of development in the world we’re living. Definitely, the world we’re living in can’t be the same without art and its relation to us and its effects on the theories and applications we’re able to make, as a product of the arts in synergy with our senses and perspective.

- Redundant and with much much fill-ins no? HAHA. It’s just Anthro so, yea. Mediocrity at its finest. :)

Miss Universe 2008: Latina Fever

Friday, July 11th, 2008
Three more days to the Finals, Latinas are the ones to beat this year!

After a year of Asian beauties’ dominion on Miss Universe 2007, this year’s contest is fronted by heavily-favored Latin countries! And here are my top three bets to win the crown.

And they are as follows:

Elisa Najera of MEXICO.

Dayana Mendoza of VENEZUELA.

Taliana Vargas of COLOMBIA.

For this year, the top fifteen countries who performed the best in the preliminaries would advance to the Finals to be held at Crown Convention Center, Nha Trang, Vietnam.

While there won’t be any MISS PHOTOGENIC AWARD for this year, the BEST IN NATIONAL COSTUME Award will be the determined through votation. And with that, I am encouraging all of you to take some time to vote for this year’s Miss Philippines, Jennifer Barrientos.

Marky of TIKLATON and Inghinyero encourages you to vote for Miss Philippines!

General Instructions:

  1. Go to THIS LINK!
  2. In the Menu Bar just above the thumbnail pictures of the delegates, click ASIA/AUSTRALIA.
  3. Look for the Philippines’ Costume (like the picture above & it’s actually in the page 2).

  5. After clicking, a preview will then appear on the right side of the page. Click “SELECT THIS DELEGATE” located just below that preview.
  6. The bad things is, we are to choose 3 delegates! So be sure NOT to vote for those countries that will surely be a strong competitor for the AWARD! :)
  7. After choosing the Philippines and the “other” two countries, click on “SUBMIT VOTE” located just below the thumbnail pictures.
  8. Follow the SIMPLE instructions after that!
  9. You’re done! Go Philippines!

Over.

Friday, July 11th, 2008
Exams are finally over. And my life’s back to normal… well, at least for a week or two. I had three exams last week, three MAJOR exams (to underscore the IMPORTANCE of passing these exams) rattled my oh-so-happy life.

Last Saturday was the ES 12 exam and boy, it was hard. Some freaking people told me they aced it, I didn’t. So, yep, the moment they tell me that, I’m melting in disappointment. I sucked at the exam. But I guess I’m good at hiding disappointments or whatchamacallit. No one knows how I really feel after that exam. I’m actually pitying myself now. I guess I didn’t prepare that much for that exam and so I deserve to get a really low score. But something inside me is telling me that I did fairly well, I just didn’t focus on the smallest things, the ones to consider in the exam.

Meanwhile, my professor in ME 63 told us that we’ll be having a surprise exam this week. I am really not prepared but I anticipated that the exam would be on last Tuesday… and yes, the exam was last Tuesday. I thought I’ve prepared enough but I guess I fought the battle unprepared. Super loser. I don’t get it. I didn’t sleep until I master the problems given on the book. I really have to get a high grade on the next exam. I can imagine the looks that my teacher will be giving at my exam paper, her eyes would literally pop out from disappointment since she teaches really well, and I, a very responsible student *sarcastic* didn’t seem to get what she’s been talking about for the past weeks! What a disappointment. An not to mention, red marks all over my paper. I won’t be surprised to see if it’d seem that it looked like it got drenched in blood for red would be the color of the day. And failure is the word of the day.

Last Wednesday, I took ES 21 exam with all enthusiasm and confidence and what-have-you. I know I’m gonna ace my exam. I just can feel it. When I read the exam paper…

Number 1. Matrix. Determinant Theorems. Peanuts. Perfect.
Number 2. Oh, Inverse. But what the heck? Gauss Jordan Method? *skips*
Number 3. Oh look, Ranks and Gaussian Elimination Method. Cool. Answered it. Peanuts. Semi-sure of the answer I gave.

Then I returned to #2. And all I can think of is sh*t. sh*t. sh*t. What should I do? But I’m left with ten more minutes to do a crap alternative solution. And it’s over. I entered the battle aiming for a perfect score and ending up with just passing, just because of that #2 question. Darn.

Exams are over. I’m over them.

Friends

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008
When they leave us, it sucks big time.
When all of a sudden they act as if you never existed in their lives, its suicidal.

I once thought I can live by myself, my family and no one else. I’m very keen with who I befriend, I don’t trust much. I’ve one of those who likes reading people and from that, I know who to get acquainted with and those who won’t be there all along. Well, I can say, I’ve been mostly right.

Some “friends” go, but when they go and leave us, then that means they’re not the “friends” we thought they would be. Or, they would probably be the ones you’ve expected most to be the ones, there, to care for you when you’re down, but then, they’re not the ones by your side.

I’ve been thinking. I kept a set of friends, some elementary friends, some high school friends (most of them I consider as “real friends” come from this bunch). Some from college. Most are my dormmates and orgmates. One thing I’m uncertain with my college friends and those whom I consider as “friends” in this moment in time, is if they would be willing to stay in the race with me until the finish line. I mean, there’s still a lot to conquer. Some, for sure, I’ll lose along the way. Some, I’ve already lost along the way.

Sometimes, I ask myself if I’ve been a really good friend to others. I am, I think. I might not be at par but I do care for my friends. I do worry where and what’s happening to them every passing second. I do want to make sure that they’re okay all the time. I do my best to be a “friend” to them.

Friends are really important. You share bundles of joy and heartaches together. May it be virtual or personal, its hard to lose someone who knows you very well. Someone, who carries you when you’re down or shares you their life and most-kept secrets. They always know when you’re in a good or in a bullcr*p mood. I’ve lived the recent parts of my life dependent of my friends, for they’re love for me, is enough to satisfy my cravings for romantic partner. In fact, I don’t need one now.

And that’s probably the most painful part. Since you’ve gotta be reminiscing the days it has been. Those memories you shared. Those text messages and YM conversations you enjoyed. It sucks to let go of someone who has been a part of your lifestyle, an extension of your soul, when before’s just much to let go.

What bothers me is the irony when you were once “friends” and possibly the best buddies you’ve had since like ever, and then, it comes to a point that you wouldn’t even mind each other because of such egoistical things caused by petty stuffs. Then it’s not friendship we built, we can’t let any “petty” thing get in out way if we’re “friends” . When pride’s at stake, when image and name’s at stake, I guess, it’s an issue. But, isn’t it exaggerated if a lot of “sorries”, “peace offerings” plus “what can i do to make it right?’s” ends up getting unnoticed when for a fact, that you’re friend have done the same thing to you before?

Well, I’ve committed mistakes. A bunch of them. I said my sorry. It’s all up to you to accept it. I’ve carried the burden so much and I’ve tolerated much of your so-called tantrums. But, isn’t it unfair, that it’s always about you? Isn’t it taking advantage of my feelings? Remember when I asked you if you’re conceited. I do feel conceited when we talk about us you. you. you. And now, that it was me who has made a significant mistake, I’m worthy of being extinct in your life? Is that the lowest I can get from being such a fool friend to you throughout these months?

These might be all blurry and probably not the most coherent entry but it really sucks to lose a friend. Especially, if you’re really eager to try it all out once again and then, just because of my careless generalization, it would’ve caused the friendship I’ve cherished, to end.

Sometimes, friends are our secret lovers. They don’t fail to love us even if we’re in our lowest. But sometimes too, they’re our secret enemies, ’cause when they leave us, when we lose them and when they turn their backs against us, its more than memories and time that’s lost. Its a part of our entirety that seems to be missing, that we might not even be able to regain.

All I can hope is I don’t lose any more of my friends. I hope I haven’t lost you yet. Friend.
Maybe I’m ranting now and that defies that you’re an important part of me I have and am wanting to regain.
